Why Do Kids Melt Down After School?

August 9, 2026 by Dr. Elise Rigney

If you’ve ever picked your child up from school only to be greeted by tears, frustration, or a complete meltdown, you’re not alone.

Many parents tell us the same thing:

“They held it together all day… then completely fell apart the second they got home.”

While it can feel confusing (or even frustrating), it’s actually a common response to a full day of learning, socializing, following directions, and adapting to new environments.

Throughout the school day, children are constantly processing information, navigating social situations, and responding to expectations. By the time they get home, they’re often mentally and emotionally drained. Home is their safe place, so it’s where those big feelings finally come out. Research has shown that children experience mental fatigue after sustained cognitive effort, making emotional regulation more challenging by the end of the day.¹

How Can You Help?

While every child is different, a few simple habits can make the transition from school to home a little smoother:

  • Give them time to decompress. Not every child wants to talk about their day the moment they walk through the door.
  • Offer a healthy snack and water. Fuel can make a big difference after a long day.
  • Encourage movement. A walk, bike ride, or time outside can help children reset before homework or evening activities.
  • Keep routines predictable. Consistent after-school routines help children feel safe, reduce stress, and provide a sense of security.²

Supporting the Whole Child

At Impact Chiropractic, we believe a child’s ability to learn, adapt, and thrive is influenced by many factors—including sleep, movement, nutrition, emotional well-being, and a healthy nervous system.

Our goal isn’t just to help kids feel better—it’s to help them function at their best so they can confidently navigate the challenges of growing up.

If school afternoons have become the hardest part of your day, know that you’re not alone. Sometimes, a few small changes can make a big difference.

If you’d like to learn more, we’d love to have you join us for our upcoming Helping Your Child Thrive This School Year workshop with Dr. Lauren and Dr. Jesse, where we’ll share practical strategies to support your child’s focus, emotional regulation, and overall well-being this school year.

Back to School Starts with a Healthy Nervous System

August 2, 2026 by Dr. Elise Rigney

Back-to-school season is almost here! While you’re checking off school supply lists, buying new shoes, and preparing for busy schedules, don’t forget about one of the most important tools your child has—their nervous system.

As kids head back into the classroom, they’re also returning to earlier mornings, homework, sports, extracurricular activities, and new routines. All of these changes place added stress on their growing bodies.

Your nervous system is responsible for helping your body adapt to those daily stresses. It plays a role in everything from movement and coordination to sleep, focus, and overall well-being.

That’s why so many families choose to include chiropractic care as part of their back-to-school routine. Regular adjustments help support proper nervous system function so kids can better adapt to the demands of the school year.

Whether your child is starting kindergarten, middle school, college, or anywhere in between, a healthy nervous system helps lay the foundation for a successful year ahead.

Here’s to a school year full of learning, growth, and feeling your very best!

Road Trips, Vacations & Summer Adventures: Don’t Forget About Recovery

July 26, 2026 by Dr. Elise Rigney

Summer is one of the busiest travel seasons of the year. Whether you’re heading into the mountains for the weekend, taking a family road trip, or flying across the country, traveling often means long hours sitting, carrying luggage, and sleeping somewhere other than your own bed.

While vacations are meant to be relaxing, they can also leave your body feeling stiff, sore, and fatigued.

Here are a few simple ways to help your body recover while traveling:

  • Take breaks to stretch during long drives.
  • Stay hydrated throughout the day.
  • Keep moving whenever possible, especially after long periods of sitting.
  • Prioritize quality sleep, even when your schedule changes.
  • Ease back into your normal routine after returning home.

Small habits like these can make a big difference in how your body feels throughout the summer.

At Impact Chiropractic, we believe the goal isn’t just to recover from discomfort—it’s to help you stay healthy enough to enjoy every adventure along the way.

Whether your summer plans include hiking, traveling, golfing, camping, or simply spending more time outdoors with family, taking care of your body allows you to make the most of every moment.

We hope you have a safe, healthy, and adventure-filled summer!

Why Chiropractic & SoftWave Therapy Work So Well Together

July 22, 2026 by Dr. Elise Rigney

When people hear about SoftWave Therapy for the first time, one of the most common questions is:

“Do I still need chiropractic care?”

The answer depends on your individual condition and goals, but the two therapies often work incredibly well together because they each serve a different purpose.

Chiropractic care focuses on restoring proper movement within the spine and joints while supporting a healthy, well-functioning nervous system. When your body moves well, it can better adapt, recover, and function the way it was designed to.

SoftWave Therapy focuses on the soft tissues surrounding those joints. Using electrohydraulic shockwave technology, it helps stimulate the body’s natural healing response by supporting circulation and encouraging tissue repair.

Rather than replacing one another, these approaches often complement each other.

For example, someone recovering from a shoulder injury may benefit from chiropractic care to improve joint mobility while also using SoftWave Therapy to support healing within the surrounding muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

Every patient is different, which is why your care plan should always be tailored to your specific needs.

At Impact Chiropractic, our goal is to help you move better, recover more efficiently, and get back to doing the activities you love. For many patients, combining chiropractic care with SoftWave Therapy provides a comprehensive, natural approach to healing and recovery.

If you’re wondering whether one—or both—may be appropriate for you, our team is happy to answer your questions and help you explore your options.

Exploring Golden This Summer? Don’t Forget About Recovery

July 19, 2026 by Dr. Elise Rigney

Golden is one of Colorado’s most popular summer destinations—and it’s easy to see why. Whether you’re hiking North Table Mountain, spending the afternoon along Clear Creek, exploring downtown, or grabbing dinner on Washington Avenue, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy the season.

Some of our favorite summer activities in Golden include:

  • Hiking North or South Table Mountain
  • Walking along Clear Creek
  • Visiting local coffee shops and restaurants
  • Exploring downtown Golden
  • Biking local trails
  • Attending community events throughout the summer

With all that activity comes one important reminder: don’t forget about recovery.

Long hikes, increased walking, biking, and other outdoor adventures can place added stress on your muscles and joints. Staying hydrated, stretching, getting quality sleep, and allowing your body time to recover can help you continue enjoying everything Colorado has to offer.

If you’ve noticed lingering soreness or stiffness after your summer adventures, it may be your body’s way of asking for a little extra attention.

Whether you’re spending the day on the trails or simply enjoying time with family, taking care of your body helps ensure you’re ready for your next adventure.

We hope you have a safe, active, and memorable summer in Golden!

Can SoftWave Therapy Help Arthritis?

July 15, 2026 by Dr. Elise Rigney

Arthritis affects millions of people and is one of the most common causes of joint pain and stiffness. Whether it’s your knees, hips, shoulders, or hands, arthritis can make everyday activities feel much more difficult than they should.

While there isn’t a cure for arthritis, many people are looking for conservative treatment options that help them stay active and continue doing the things they love.

One option gaining attention is SoftWave Therapy.

SoftWave Therapy uses electrohydraulic shockwave technology designed to stimulate the body’s natural healing response. Research suggests it may help support circulation, reduce inflammation, and encourage tissue repair, making it an excellent complement to an overall treatment plan for many patients.

Patients often seek SoftWave Therapy for arthritis-related discomfort because it is:

  • Non-invasive
  • Drug-free
  • Surgery-free
  • Associated with little to no downtime

Every patient responds differently, which is why your first visit includes a thorough consultation and evaluation to determine the most appropriate treatment approach for your individual needs.

At Impact Chiropractic, we’re proud to offer SoftWave Therapy at our Fort Collins, Loveland, and Golden locations. Our goal is always to help patients move better, feel better, and return to the activities they enjoy most.

If arthritis has been limiting your daily life, it may be time to explore a different approach to supporting your body’s natural healing process.
