5 Reasons You Should See an Auto Accident Chiropractor

April 24, 2024 by Dr. Elise Rigney

Car accidents can be a terrible experience, leaving you with physical and emotional trauma. Amidst all the craziness, it’s important to prioritize your health, especially when it comes to injuries that may not be immediately apparent.

Seeking the expertise of an auto accident chiropractor could make a big in your recovery process. Here are five reasons why you should consider seeing a car accident chiropractor.

Key Takeaways

  • Hidden Injuries: Car accidents can result in hidden injuries like whiplash, which may not manifest symptoms immediately but can lead to chronic pain if left untreated.
  • Non-invasive Treatment Option: Chiropractic care offers non-invasive treatment options that focus on addressing the root cause of your injuries rather than just masking the symptoms.
  • Prompt Support: Seeking chiropractic treatment promptly after a car accident can improve your chances of a full recovery and may also support your personal injury claim.

Reasons to See a Chiropractor

After experiencing a car accident, it’s natural to prioritize immediate concerns and overlook potential injuries that may not be immediately apparent. However, considering how complicated post-accident recovery can be, it’s a good idea to look into seeking the expertise of a chiropractor who specializes in post-accident recovery.

Beyond just the need for treatment, there are other reasons for consulting a professional chiropractor. Chiropractic care can offer many benefits in the aftermath of a car accident. From early detection of hidden injuries to the support provided for personal injury claims, each reason facilitates a speedy recovery and lasting relief.

1. Early Detection and Treatment of Whiplash Injuries

whiplash after a car accident

One of the most common injuries sustained in car accidents is whiplash, which occurs when the neck is forcefully jerked back and forth, causing strain to the muscles and ligaments. Unlike obvious injuries like broken bones, whiplash may not present immediate symptoms. However, the impact of the accident can cause micro-tears in the soft tissues of the neck, leading to inflammation and pain over time.

Our auto accident chiropractors are trained to recognize the signs of whiplash, even in the absence of immediate symptoms. By conducting a thorough evaluation and possibly ordering X-rays or other diagnostic tests, we can identify any underlying injuries and develop a tailored treatment plan to address them.

In addition, our chiropractors are adept at tailoring their treatment strategies to suit your individual needs and injuries. Following a car accident, each person’s experience and resulting injuries are unique. Our skilled auto accident chiropractors will conduct a comprehensive evaluation to find out the full extent of your injuries, including any hidden or underlying issues such as whiplash or soft tissue damage.

We will craft a personalized treatment plan designed specifically for you. This approach targets your specific circumstances, focusing on restoring mobility, alleviating discomfort, and fostering your body’s natural healing processes.

2. Holistic Approach to Healing

patient receiving chiropractic care

Chiropractic care focuses on restoring the body’s natural alignment and function without the need for invasive procedures or pain medication. Through gentle chiropractic adjustments, a car accident chiropractor can help realign the spine, relieve pressure on nerves, and reduce inflammation in the affected areas.

Additionally, chiropractors may incorporate other treatments such as physical therapy, massage, and exercises to strengthen the muscles and improve flexibility. By taking a holistic approach to healing, chiropractic care aims to not only alleviate pain but also improve overall well-being and mobility.

3. Support for Personal Injury Claims

In the aftermath of a car accident, dealing with insurance companies and legal proceedings can be overwhelming. Seeking prompt medical attention from an auto accident chiropractor can provide valuable documentation of your injuries and the treatment received, which can strengthen your personal injury claim.

Chiropractors are experienced in working with car accident victims and understand the importance of thorough documentation and clear communication with insurance adjusters and attorneys. By working with a car accident chiropractor, you can make sure that your rights are protected and that you receive the compensation you deserve for your injuries and related expenses.

4. Targeted Pain Relief and Improved Range of Motion

people using chiropractic tools to relieve neck pain

The force and impact of an accident can cause plenty of different injuries, leading to discomfort and restricted movement. Our chiropractors use specialized techniques to address these issues directly, focusing on realigning the spine and restoring proper function to the musculoskeletal system.

Through gentle adjustments, we target specific areas of tension and misalignment, relieving pressure on nerves and reducing inflammation. The treatment can significantly increase your range of motion as well, which may be compromised following your car accident. Soft tissue injuries, muscle strains, and joint stiffness can restrict movement and hinder your ability to perform everyday tasks comfortably. We use a combination of manual adjustments, therapeutic exercises, and rehabilitative techniques to improve flexibility and restore full range of motion to affected areas.

By releasing tension in muscles and promoting proper alignment of the spine, we can help you regain mobility and function more efficiently. Whether you’re struggling to turn your head without pain or experiencing limitations in your shoulder or back movements, chiropractic treatment can help you achieve greater flexibility and mobility, so you can return to your pre-accident level of activity and performance.

We address the root cause of your pain and focus on restoring proper alignment and function to the body. This treatment provides lasting relief without the need for medication or invasive procedures. With the help of a skilled chiropractor from Impact Chiropractic, you can experience increased comfort, improved mobility, and a faster return to optimal health and wellness.

5. Faster Recovery Time and Lasting Results

Chiropractic care operates on the principle of addressing the root cause of injuries rather than just alleviating symptoms. When you experience a car accident, the impact can cause misalignments in the spine, strains in muscles and ligaments, and other structural issues that lead to pain and discomfort. By realigning the spine and restoring proper function to the musculoskeletal system, chiropractic adjustments tackle these underlying issues directly, allowing your body to heal more effectively.

Rather than relying on external interventions like pain medication, which may only mask symptoms temporarily and carry the risk of side effects, chiropractic treatment works with your body’s innate healing mechanisms. Through gentle adjustments, chiropractors help restore balance and alignment, optimize nervous system function, and promote circulation, all of which are essential for the body’s self-repair processes.

This approach not only provides relief from immediate pain but also sets the stage for long-term healing and recovery. By addressing the root cause of your injuries and supporting your body’s innate healing abilities, chiropractic care can expedite your recovery time and reduce the risk of long-term complications. Additionally, because chiropractic treatment is non-invasive and drug-free, it offers a safe and effective alternative for managing pain and promoting healing, without the potential risks associated with medications or surgical procedures.

Next Steps

If you’ve been involved in a car accident, don’t underestimate the importance of seeking prompt medical attention, even if you don’t immediately feel injured. By consulting with an auto accident chiropractor, you can receive the comprehensive care and support you need to recover from your injuries, alleviate pain, and reclaim your quality of life.

Remember, your health is your most valuable asset, so don’t delay in prioritizing it after a car accident. Contact a car accident chiropractor today to schedule a consultation and take the first step towards a full and speedy recovery!

Can a Chiropractor Fix Scoliosis?

April 16, 2024 by Dr. Elise Rigney

Can a chiropractor fix scoliosis? The straightforward answer is no. However, while chiropractic care cannot cure scoliosis, it can greatly help manage the condition, particularly for those with functional scoliosis. This article explains how chiropractors aid scoliosis patients and outlines the benefits chiropractic care can provide in scoliosis treatment.

Key Takeaways

  • Types of Scoliosis: There are different types of scoliosis, each requiring customized chiropractic treatment approaches; functional scoliosis has a better prognosis for correction through chiropractic methods than structural scoliosis.
  • Prevention of Progression: Chiropractic care for scoliosis focuses on preventing curvature progression, managing symptoms, and improving alignment. It cannot fully straighten a spine affected by structural scoliosis.
  • Comprehensive Treatment: Comprehensive scoliosis treatment can include chiropractic care combined with other therapies such as physical therapy, bracing, and nutritional support for better management and symptom relief.

Understanding Scoliosis: Causes and Types

Scoliosis is a condition characterized by an abnormal curvature of the spine. However, it’s more than just a simple curve; it’s a complex condition with a variety of potential causes. The most common form is adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, primarily affecting adolescents. It’s suspected to be hereditary, but the exact causes continue to elude medical professionals.

Certain conditions, such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy, are known to be associated with scoliosis, presenting more complex cases of the condition. Various types include:

  • Idiopathic scoliosis
  • Neuromuscular scoliosis
  • Degenerative scoliosis
  • Congenital scoliosis

Among these, further distinctions are made between structural and functional scoliosis. Understanding these types is necessary to identify the most effective treatment strategies.

Structural Scoliosis

Structural scoliosis presents a significant challenge. It’s characterized by abnormal, permanent curvatures of the spine that cannot be fully corrected through chiropractic adjustments. The primary cause of structural scoliosis is an abnormal bone shape, leading to a misaligned and potentially less stable spine.

These permanent spinal curvatures can have far-reaching implications for overall health and well-being, extending beyond mere physical discomfort. While chiropractic care can provide substantial benefits in managing scoliosis symptoms, it will not suffice for entirely correcting structural scoliosis.

Functional Scoliosis

When it comes to functional scoliosis, on the other hand, the story takes a slightly different turn. This type of scoliosis is characterized by a temporary spinal curvature that arises from specific conditions such as poor posture or muscle imbalances. The very nature of functional scoliosis allows for more optimism in terms of treatment.

Unlike structural scoliosis, functional scoliosis can often be corrected through chiropractic care. Why? Because chiropractic care addresses the underlying causes of functional scoliosis, such as muscle imbalances. This makes it a potentially effective approach for managing functional scoliosis and improving the quality of life for many patients.

Chiropractic Treatment for Scoliosis: What to Expect

Fort Collins chiropractor with patient

So, what does chiropractic care for scoliosis look like? Primarily, it focuses on preventing progression of the curvature, improving overall well-being, and managing symptoms. Chiropractic treatment involves techniques like spinal adjustments and possibly the use of electrical muscle stimulation, aiming to reduce pain and muscle spasms. However, it’s worth noting that improper chiropractic treatment may aggravate nerve irritation, intensify pain, and potentially exacerbate the condition.

Chiropractic care also goes beyond just adjustments. It incorporates specific exercises and stretches, which helps with:

  • Strengthening core muscles
  • Improving posture
  • Promoting better spinal alignment
  • Contributing to enhanced mobility and flexibility.

The key to successful scoliosis treatment lies in customizing treatment plans for each individual, addressing all aspects of your condition for maximum treatment efficacy.

Can Chiropractors Straighten a Curved Spine?

fort collins patient with chiropractor

The million-dollar question is, can a chiropractor straighten a curved spine? The answer is not as straightforward as you might think. Structural curves in a spine affected by scoliosis can’t be fully straightened or corrected by chiropractic care alone. Even though it is beneficial in many aspects, chiropractic treatment cannot reverse the curvature of the spine in scoliosis. Surgical intervention is the only known method for straightening scoliosis.

However, the aim of chiropractic care for scoliosis isn’t to straighten the spine but to restore proper alignment to the spine and improve joint function. By restoring proper alignment, this can facilitate your body’s natural healing process.

Chiropractic care offers improvements in spinal alignment and flexibility. These improvements are beneficial for scoliosis patients, contributing to better spinal health and providing symptom relief.

Techniques Used by Chiropractors for Scoliosis Patients

chiropractor with patient

Chiropractors use a variety of techniques when treating scoliosis patients. Spinal manipulation techniques include gentle, specific adjustments that aim to correct the spine into a more natural curvature. These adjustments are done without unnecessary twisting or turning of the neck, and they often improve your range of motion.

In addition to spinal manipulation, chiropractors also use soft tissue techniques to manage scoliosis symptoms, including:

  • Massage therapy
  • Myofascial release
  • Trigger point therapy
  • Stretching exercises

These techniques complement the adjustments and manipulations, providing a comprehensive approach to managing the condition.

Complementary Therapies for Scoliosis Management

In comprehensive scoliosis treatment plans, chiropractic care can be effectively complemented by the following:

  • Working alongside physical therapists
  • Implementing additional approaches such as physical therapy and bracing
  • Using specialized exercise programs
  • Stabilizing and improving spinal curves

Impact Chiropractic’s Approach to Scoliosis Treatment

Impact Chiropractic is a community-driven health center focused on providing whole-person chiropractic care and designed to improve your overall quality of life.

At Impact Chiropractic, every scoliosis patient receives a personalized treatment plan that addresses their unique spinal curvature and overall health needs. This is done by integrating chiropractic care, physical therapy, corrective bracing, and rehabilitation.

Long-Term Benefits of Chiropractic Care for Scoliosis

Chiropractic care may improve spinal health by promoting correct spinal alignment and can increase the range of motion for individuals with scoliosis.

Chiropractic interventions can potentially reduce the progression of the curvature in scoliosis cases, lead to long-term improvements in spinal curvature, and result in a significant reduction in pain associated with scoliosis.

Finding the right approach can drastically improve your quality of life by providing pain relief and alleviating scoliosis pain and complications.

When to Seek Medical Intervention for Scoliosis

impact chiropractor with patient in fort collins

Despite the benefits of chiropractic care, there are times when medical intervention becomes necessary. Severe cases of structural scoliosis, typically when the curvature reaches 45 degrees or more, may require medical intervention, including bracing or surgery. However, in cases of mild scoliosis, chiropractic care can be an effective treatment option.

Surgical options for scoliosis when significant curvature is present include spinal fusion and vertebral body tethering. These surgical interventions can provide a more definitive solution to spinal curvature, while conservative scoliosis treatment options may be explored in less severe cases to treat scoliosis.

It’s important to realize that surgery isn’t always the only solution for scoliosis treatment. A thorough understanding of the condition has paved the way for effective non-surgical treatment strategies.

Summary

Managing scoliosis through chiropractic care allows us to explore a holistic perspective of health. Yes, chiropractic care may not entirely fix the curvature of the spine in scoliosis patients. However, it offers a range of benefits, from managing symptoms to preventing curvature progression and improving your overall well-being.

Our chiropractors provide personalized care that can make a significant difference in the lives of patients. So, while it’s important to recognize that chiropractic care isn’t a magic cure for scoliosis, it’s an essential piece of the puzzle in managing this complex condition.

Say Goodbye to Low Back Pain: Understanding the Causes

April 20, 2023 by Impact Chiropractic

For many of us, gone are the days where we can clean the house, go for a walk, play with the kids, play with our pets, or, if we’re being honest, simply go to sleep without putting ourselves at risk for neck or low back pain.

Sound familiar?

Surprise sleep injuries aside, if you’re all too familiar with back pain, you’ve come to the right place at Impact Chiropractic Loveland!

As the leading low back pain specialist in Loveland, we know a thing or two about the common causes of low back pain.

Keep reading to learn more about what might be behind yours and, more importantly, what you can do to say goodbye to low back pain.

Bottom Line:

Low back pain is the number one reason people worldwide visit their doctor and miss work.

If you’ve dealt with it in the past (or maybe even right now), you know back pain can change your life in an instant.

Not being able to enjoy hobbies, difficulty in your ability to work, and a sneaking suspicion that you may never get “back to normal” are all normal when you’re experiencing a bout of back pain.

So why do so many people here in Loveland, Colorado and around the world struggle with back pain?

In many cases, your daily habits are a big contributor to your back pain.

Why it Matters:

If you’ve been living with aches and pain, it’s often connected to distorted movement patterns that affect your neuromusculoskeletal system – your brain, nerves, muscles, bones, joints, cartilage, tendons, etc.

And those abnormal movement patterns can happen for a variety of reasons that range from long hours at a computer and repetitive stress to sudden injuries.

That repetitive stress combined with nagging injuries, a diet filled with inflammatory foods, or a lack of daily exercise and movement can all contribute to an increased likelihood of back pain.

Common Causes of Low Back Pain

Here are the three most common causes of low back pain…

1. Sprain/Strain Injuries: Repetitive stress can create inflammation and lead to sprains or strains.

2. Spinal Disc Issues: Disc bulges and herniations can press on your spinal nerves, leading to back pain that travels to other parts of the body.

3. Arthritis: As you get older, your body will naturally go through some degenerative changes, and if your spinal joints become inflamed, you may notice some pain.

A whopping 80% of us will experience low back pain at some point in our lives, and none of us want to rely on pills to feel better.

The good news is that, in most cases, sprains and strains and joint issues can heal pretty quickly with the right care.

That’s where we come in!

An overwhelming majority of people recover from back pain naturally or with a little additional help from a chiropractor.

So, if you’ve been searching for a low back pain specialist in Loveland, you’ve come to the right place!

Research supports the use of chiropractic care for the treatment of all causes of and all types of low back pain.

Get this.

In a recent study, researchers found that low back pain patients with disc issues who received chiropractic care experienced the same if not more relief than patients who underwent invasive back surgeries.

Next Steps:

While it may feel like you’ll never get back to your old self, the odds are in your favor that you will!

And even if you typically seem to recover by taking it easy for a few days, it’s still a smart decision to visit a chiropractor.

Chiropractic care has been part of the wellness conversation worldwide for well over 125 years, and our chiropractic practice is proud to serve the Loveland community now and for years to come.

Our low back pain specialists will work with you to determine both what’s at the root of your low back pain and the non-invasive treatment options that make sense for you.

Research also strongly suggests that periodic chiropractic care – just like dynamic stretching and regular exercise – can help prevent future episodes of low back pain.

Mental Health and Chiropractic

September 6, 2022 by Impact Chiropractic

Studies show that one in five Americans deal with mental health illnesses. Your mental health is so important to prioritize and considering everything going on in the world, it is essential now more than ever. Whether you experience anxiety or depression or know someone who does, it is always valuable to check in with yourself and others on their mental health.

Chiropractic is a great way to practice self-care and take steps towards good mental health. Because of the mind-body approach of Chiropractic, we often see patients who experience positive emotional changes in response to routine chiropractic care. If you are looking for a holistic way to address struggles with mental health, you may consider seeing a chiropractor.

Symptoms of Anxiety/Depression

While there are many symptoms of anxiety and depression that vary from person to person, some common physical symptoms include:

  • Chronic fatigue/Sleep problems
  • Muscle tension
  • Migraines/Headaches
  • Restlessness
  • Stomach Aches

How Chiropractic Provides Relief from Stress and Anxiety

When doing a chiropractic adjustment, we are looking for areas in the nervous system that are out of balance. When you have subluxations or misalignments in your spine, you may be experiencing symptoms of muscle tension due to your body being stuck in a stressful state. When you get adjusted, your body begins to release that stress often resulting in more mental clarity.

The nervous system is the control center of the body and it helps keep the body in homeostasis. Because the goal of chiropractic is to restore the function of the nervous system, we often see that patients who are experiencing anxiety or depression find relief.

A Holistic Approach

Chiropractic care is not a cure or replacement for therapy but that does not mean it can’t be beneficial for those struggling with their mental health. While medications prescribed for anxiety and depression come with side effects, chiropractic provides an all-natural approach to improved mental health. If you are looking to address your mental health symptoms in a holistic way, try out chiropractic care.

Relieves Tension

One of the most common symptoms we see in patients experiencing depression and anxiety is muscle tension. Chiropractic focuses on spinal health as well as musculoskeletal health. Routine adjustments help relieve muscle tension caused by depression and anxiety resulting in headaches or stiffness in the body. This kind of relief promotes relaxation and better sleep which can go a long way when it comes to mental health.

Releases Positive Hormones

Chiropractic adjustments trigger a release of positive hormones such as oxytocin and cortisol. These hormones help reduce stress and increase overall health and well-being.

Back to School and Chiropractic

August 16, 2022 by Impact Chiropractic

Mood swings, meltdowns, and outbursts, oh my! We know transitions can be hard, especially for kiddos heading back from the summer relaxation to the school year’s hustle and bustle. We love knowing that chiropractic adjustments can help the nervous system to be more adaptable to those changes!

How Chiropractic Can Help

Adjustments allow the nervous system to be more at ease, and be more adaptable through life! Stressors come in all forms- mental, physical, and chemical. Adjustments are one thing we can add to ease the external stressors on our bodies. If your child or one you know has a difficult time with transitions, consider getting them checked by a pediatric chiropractor to see where the hidden stressors lie within, and if chiropractic is a good fit for your family’s goals!!

Backpack Ergonomics

Wearing a backpack can put stress on the body especially when it is not done correctly!

Wearing a backpack properly is a crucial step you can take in order to make sure your kiddos aren’t stressing their bodies or their posture. Using two straps is essential to make sure there are not any asymmetries that are occurring.  Holding the weight higher above the pant line will spread the weight out instead of letting the backpack go lower on the back. Talking to your kiddos about how poor posture when wearing a backpack can lead to lower sports performance, more fatigue, and soreness it may help give them the motivation they need to have better posture!

Sitting at a Desk

When kiddos are sitting at their desk we want to ensure they aren’t leaning forward, backward, or to any side. Being neutral and sitting straight up is a great way to make sure they aren’t stressing their body. This can be hard in the uncomfortable chairs they use at school so a great tip is to stick their sweatshirt behind their low back for more support. Have your kiddo take breaks to move their body and their neck from looking down all day. Bedtime yoga is a great way to keep the body mobile with how much sitting they have to do throughout the school year.

3 T Reduction (Stress)

July 19, 2022 by Impact Chiropractic

In our office, you’ll hear us talking about the 3 T’s of chiropractic. The 3 T’s are thoughts, traumas, & toxins. These are the 3 main ways we get subluxated in the first place; thoughts being our mental or emotional stress, traumas being physical stressors, and toxins being chemical stress. Everything we’re exposed to in our environment has to be processed by our nervous systems. So when the body is unable to adapt to whatever stress it encounters, it stores it in the body which is when symptoms start to show up. Before we get to the point of pain and discomfort, we want to encourage you to be PROactive rather than REactive when it comes to your health. By reducing “the 3 T’s” you can reduce stress on your system to help you feel and function better!

Reducing Emotional Stress

This can be a whole blog post in itself. But mental health can be an overwhelming topic to unpack, so taking baby steps can help it be a little more manageable. One simple thing you can incorporate into your day to reduce emotional stress is meditation. Numerous studies have shown amazing benefits of meditation, including reducing overall stress and anxiety. Insight Timer is an awesome free app you can use to start practicing.

Reducing Physical Stress

When we talk about physical stressors many people think of car accidents, broken bones, slips, falls, etc. But another major form of physical stress is actually LACK of movement. We live in the age of technology, which makes everything accessible at our fingertips. Society is sitting more than they ever have, and it’s affecting our health and wellbeing. The spine and nervous system need to be in motion to stay healthy. During those long days at the office make sure you’re incorporating some movement into your schedule. An easy way to do this is when you’re on your lunch break, do about 5-10 minutes of intentional movement. This can be a quick yoga flow or a few minutes of stretching to get the blood flowing and muscles warmed up again. It doesn’t take much, and your body will thank you!

Reduce Chemical Stress

Everything we put in and on our bodies must be processed by the nervous system. Chemical stress can come in many forms; it’s the food we eat, the water we drink, the medications we take, and even the personal care products we use on our bodies. Think about how many products we use in a day, then multiply that by months, then years. That is a lot of different chemicals we’re exposed to over our lifetime. That’s why being intentional with the products we purchase is so important. Everything adds up and impacts our health, so one way to help reduce your toxin load is to buy organic whenever possible. Although it’s slightly more expensive than other products, the health benefits far outweigh the financial investment.

Organic food has a lower risk of exposure to antibiotics, growth hormones, and pesticides (all of which have shown negative effects on hormonal health). Organic food also provides more nutritional value, so you’re getting more out of what you’re putting into your body. A good way to start transitioning to more organic is by replacing a few things at a time. Start with items on the “Dirty Dozen” list (a list of the top 12 “dirtiest” produce).

To start your 3 T reduction journey, get started with routine chiropractic care at Impact Chiropractic. Sign up for a New Patient Appointment today.
