ADHD is an increasingly common diagnosis in our community whether it be concerning
our family members or ourselves. ADHD is regularly described as an inability to concentrate,
impulsivity, and/or hyperactivity. It can be simply described as a “chemical imbalance” but there
is much more to the story than that.
Although there are plenty of studies that support this description it is important to get
down to the root cause and truly understand the disorder and how to better help those who are
living with it. As many of you know, chiropractic focuses on the proper alignment of the spine,
which in turn affects the nervous system. People diagnosed with ADHD have an overactive
sympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system is in control of your fight or flight
response, it is the part of the nervous system that works for short amounts of time in emergency
situations. Imagine trying to go through your typical day but with a little person on your shoulder
pointing out when someone is tapping on their desk during school or telling you to run and climb
on everything you see. Not easy!
Your Central Nervous System is housed in your spinal cord and protected by your spinal
vertebrae. Our chiropractors focus on corrective care in order to help your nervous system
function at its optimum level. By correcting misalignments or subluxations along your spine our
chiropractors at Impact Chiropractic can help with cases such as ADHD. This can help improve
the overactivity of the Sympathetic Nervous System.
October is ADHD awareness month, so we here at Impact wanted to share some
information and spread awareness to our community. We love working with our pediatric patients
and helping kids live their best lives possible!
In health,
